An ongoing scam has been targeting users via text and other phone notifications. The notices claim a debt is owed for unpaid tolls. The scheme has also included fake notices sent via email. This impacts users in the United States, Canada and Europe.

These notices can often appear authentic, but they also often originate from unusual telephone numbers or have strange web addresses. Further, the scammers frequently try to create a sense of urgency, hoping the victim will panic and react by clicking links. See the samples below.

If you believe you have received a false or fake notice, or you have been the victim of a toll smishing (SMS phishing) scam, please report it to the Federal Trade Commission and/or the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov).
